When Cynthia called a couple of months ago asking whether or not I wanted to go to Florida with her and Michelle, I agreed thinking it would also be a good time to visit Diana and Hope in Apopka, about 30 miles north of Orlando. Then when we started planning for the trip, she told me that she wanted to drive rather than fly so that she could stop in New Orleans on the way down there. So plans were made to stay in New Orleans overnight, eat beignets, and then head to Disneyworld for a few days. So we started off early at 6:00 a.m. on a Thursday... ahem, I started off at 6:00 a.m. ...Cynthia, Michelle and Jordan resisted getting up that early and Cynthia kept reminding me that
"It's a road trip!" By that she meant no schedules, just drive where and when we wanted. Of course, stubborn me was having none of that. So off we went. It was actually fairly clear sailing, a little rain along the way here and there, frequent stops for McDonald's, unusual restaurants and the occasional Buc-ees super-travel store. The frequent stops did break up the monotony of the road.
Our first big stop was in New Orleans. We got into town about 4 p.m. and finally settled into the Royal Omni Hotel about a block south of Bourbon Street.
After a brief rest, we walked to Jackson Square for a little shopping and world famous beignets at Cafe Du Monde! We sat there for about an hour listening to live Jazz, drinking coffee and soda and eating that fresh, hot doughy dessert covered with enough powdered sugar to hide the beignet. Kevin looked blissfully happy eating the powdery dessert
(either that or he had a bad cocaine habit)! We finished walking around the square bumping into an occasional street performer and shopping in the many small stores around the square. As we headed back to the hotel, we stopped at a restaurant to enjoy some creole cooking. By then we were well worn out by the day's activities and headed to bed.
The next leg of our trip was a stop over in Apopka, Florida where Hope and Diana lived. We stayed 3 nights and 2 days and fortunately, both of them had pools which were the center of our daily activities. The first day we hung out with Diana at her pool. We ordered sub-sandwiches and Sicilian pizza and had an indoor picnic. The following day, we all gathered at Hope's. The girls & Kevin were in the pool most of the late morning and afternoon. When I got there, the first thing I did was get a big glass of wine (Moscato). The day was relaxed and happy. Below is a picture of me and Kevin shopping for snacks and pool floaties at Wal-mart. Later that evening we went out for drinks and a great meal at Bahama Breeze. There are several pictures of us in the slideshow below.
The final leg of our trip was Disneyworld. We spent the last 3 days in Florida staying at the Wilderness Lodge on Magic Kingdom. Staying at a Disney resort always has perks
(as well as added expense). We were able to get around Disneyworld with their bus system. This allowed us to go to the park as well as come back to the room periodically to rest up from the Florida heat.
Here is a picture of Cynthia and Kevin in front of the Disney castle. To the right, is a screamin' picture of Jordan and Michelle
(last two rows) on their Splash Mountain ride. I think that is Cynthia next to Jordan but her head is down.
