Debbie does San Antonio!

Golf group Cucumber Martini Debbie and Bill Bowman came to San Antonio for a visit. She and I had been talking about it for about 6 months so it seemed like it was never going to happen but finally things came together and we had a blast! They flew into the Austin airport about 1-1/2 hours north of us and arrived late, tired and hungry... but more hungry than tired. So even before they got to unpack their bags, we took off for a nearby restaurant, BJs, which has a large variety on its menu. The name of the restaurant was funny to them because there is a "BJs" department store up north, their version of Cosco's, but they had never heard of the restaurant.

Then we settled in for a few days! Fortunately, Michelle was able to come down from Temple with Sophia, and Erica, who lives in town, came over with Stella. So Bill and Debbie were able to visit with all of the grandkids.

The next day, they had a chance to explore some of the charm of downtown San Antonio including the Alamo and the Riverwalk (side note: The Alamo was the site of my first date with Connie in 1972!). The statue pictured above is Davy Crockett who died defending the Alamo. I remember that those coonskin caps that he is wearing were popularized in the 1950's by Disney's Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone series.

It was the best weather day that they had during their stay with temperatures in the mid-70s and with sunny blue skies. Perfect weather. Debbie and Bill said they walked over 6 miles downtown that day.

We did take a side trip to experience some real Texas BBQ. A visit to Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Q took care of that as we chowed down on brisket, sausage and creamed corn! Surprisingly, there were two other people from the Boston area visiting who just happened to be there. Jordan wore her "Boston Red Sox" shirt and they spotted us as we were coming in.

But perhaps the most fun day that we had while they were here was when they got to meet the San Antonio family at La Margarita Cantina downtown.

Above is a picture of Debbie getting serenaded by a Mariachi band during dinner.
Here I am with her enjoying a Margarita!

Debbie had previously met Connie's family in 1985 during the time of my medical school graduation and more recently in Fort Worth during Erica's and Andrew's wedding. (That was a great event!) So, despite the fact that the names and faces were a little bit fuzzy, they quickly felt welcomed and we all had plenty to eat, drink and laugh about that night. Present were David, Michael, Julian, Destiny, Jennifer, and of course, me and the kids and grandkids (all 4 of them).
The following day, they headed to Austin to explore that city for one day before they had to head back to freezin' New England!
